David Mollet – UAF Professor of Art, Painter
David has had over 20 solo exhibitions, numerous juried exhibits and was awarded the Alaska State Governor’s Award in the Arts. He will be teaching painting in Denali National Park this summer as well.

All-Member Presentation: Creating Outside the Box
Saturday lunch hour all-membership presentation on digital technology. This power point presentation will impress you with new approaches to digital media along with design and creation of 2D and 3D objects using computers, printers and analog media. No other labs/classes will be scheduled during this time.
Workshop: Inkjet Printing on Metal. Participants will learn to transfer an image of their choice on to an 8″ x 10″ sheet of metal. Supply fee $10.00. Max – 8, Min – 6

Workshop: Aluminum Casting – Lost Styrofoam Casting. Students will learn casting construction of a 3D image using lost styrofoam and aluminum, making a small sculpture. This is a 5 hour, 2 session class. Session 1, design and casting will be Saturday morning and completion will be Session 2 on Saturday afternoon. Supply fee $20.00. Max – 8, Min – 6
Workshop: Life Drawing (Sunday AM) Various approaches to drawing will be taught using a live model, including gesture, foreshortening and value studies. Fee $15 (to be paid to model at time of class) Max – 18, Min – 6

Presentation: 90 Minutes with Alvin Amason. This 90 minute presentation will show images of Amason’s whimsical and energetic paintings and will include his process of adding 3-D forms.

Workshop: Printmaking with Collagraph Plates This class will be a discussion/demonstration on the nature, construction and printing of collagraph plates, followed by an in-depth demonstration of four color overprinting of the printed collagraph. There will be an opportunity to participate in the demonstration of 4-color printing. Bring a notebook/apron. No supply fee.

Garry Mealor – UAA Associate Professor of Art, Watercolor
Workshop: Transparent Watercolor – Students will practice, understand and manipulate various transparent watercolor techniques including wet on wet, wet on dry, color mixing, masking, dry brush and introduced to airbrush. Students can purchase a 5-color Winsor Newton Cotman (8ml tubes) of Cad Red, Cobalt Blue, Cad Yellow, Burnt Sienna and Indigo for $15.00, or bring their own. Bring whatever watercolor brushes you have, the class will use a sable round #8, round #2 and a flat ½”, and a fan brush. Bring whatever you have, but natural sable is best, synthetic is worse. Paper Supply Fee: Paper used is Daniel Smith 3-sheet half pack 16”x20” of Arches 140# for $11.00. Max-16 Min-8

Workshop: Roller Printing, Rivets & Connectors with Plexi Glass. Each of these art metals techniques will be explored with an emphasis on design. Supply fee $15.00. Max – 15, Min – 6

Workshop, Session 1: Beginner Irashi Shibori. Learn this ancient Japanese dyeing technique where silk is tied onto a pole and then dyes applied and over dyed. No previous experience needed. Minimum of 2 scarves will be made. If time allows students can make more items at an additional cost. Supply fee $55. Max-15, Min-6
Workshop, Session 2: Arashi Shibori on Cotton. This ancient Japanese technique uses cotton fabric where students learn to pleat on a pole which forms a resist when over-dyed. The patterns formed are a cooperation of order and chaos. Dyes are permanent and the fabric can be washed and dried safely. No previous experience needed. Minimum of 2 scarves will be made – additional scarves can be purchased at cost. Supply fee $55.00 Max-15, Min-6
Workshop, Session 3: Intermediate Shibori: Itajime (block resist), for Beginners. Aimed at participants who have done some form of tying and dyeing before. Students will learn how to fold and dye silk to create repeated geometric patterns similar to the classic kimono fabrics of Japan. This technique is rarely taught outside Japan. Students can make 2 silk scarves or 4 silk samplers (for sewing later) with additional silk available for purchase at cost. Supply fee: $55.00 Max-15 Min-6
Linda Myers – Manager and Instructor at Alaska Bead Company
Workshop: Fusing a Fine Silver Pendant. Participants will design a multi-link pendant and bail with an optional bead. Fusing involves melting the fine ( pure) silver rather than soldering links. Students will also explore how this technique can be applied to making chain. Hammering will harden and texture the pieces. Kit fee $20. Includes fine wire silver, bead and butane gas usage: Max-12, Min-6
Qian Scott – UAA Confucious Institute Instructor
Qian has taught Chinese knotting to all ages for over 12 years.
Workshop: The Art of Chinese Knotting. Participants will learn the basics of Chinese knotting and construct 3-dimensional flowers with satin cord suitable for a pin, hair piece or vase. No supply fee on 1st flower, additional cording can be purchased, multiple flowers can be made.
Cynthia Kalfas-Cox - ASD Elementary Art Teacher, Drawing/Graphic Artist
Workshop: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Cynthia will share what she has learned from Betty Edwards book: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. She has used these techniques for over 15 years – from 2nd grade through high school – with guaranteed success. This is a hands-on workshop that will improve and strengthen your ability to teach drawing. No fee. Bring pencils/sketchbook. Max – 20, Min – 5

Workshop: Find Your Way With Paper Clay. Participants will use pre-mixed paper clay and learn how easily it adapts to sculpting, texture and construction. It is the ideal student clay for modeling. If desired, your piece can be fired after class and a raku firing will be scheduled at the artist’s studio in Anchorage. Arrangements will be made to get your art to you. Supply fee TBA. Jerelyn Miyashiro - Anchorage Artist and Founder of Junk2Funk Eco Art Workshops
Workshop: Eco Art Bookbinding – Coptic Sewing. Participants will learn coptic sewing bookbinding technique and create a blank notebook utilizing surplus paper, magazine/calendar pages and cardboard. Coptic sewing is an unsupported bookbinding technique that allows the book to lay flat when opened and creates an attractive thread binding in the exposed spine. Supply fee $15. Max – 12, Min – 6
Charity Edwards – Manager and Instructor at Tandy Leather
Workshop: Forming and Draping with Leather. Participants will learn how to tool and embellish leather before it is draped over a variety of non-porous materials to create masks, vessels, bowls, etc. No supply fee for the first project.
